SETTING UP STANDING

Starting Thursday morning the artist involved in STANDING ROOM ONLY began setting up the show that took place Friday from 5-10pm.

Myself and co-organizer Tim Kenney began ideas for STANDING a month or so after our show What Does This Have To Do With Me back in the month of May. In that show we worked semi collaboratively with 3 other artist. The experience excited me and I knew I wanted to work more with other people. Ergo, STANDING ROOM ONLY.

You might have noticed some strange looking plastic figures in the photos. Those would be Tim Kenney's creation. For his part Tim made plastic wrap castings of everyone who was in the show. Find out more about his process on his blog. We were all represented, our plastic wrap selves, in poses we chose. Some sitting, some standing, some dancing, some walking on the walls, some flying...

Something that really brought in the crowds was the local dance trio Banana Splitz who performed for the very last time at the show. They performed a piece created by member Lenae Day titled "It's More Fun in the Sun". It was a splendid dance routine. (The video will be available soon.) These girls are something else! Each an amazing dancer and such wonderful artists! Thank you Lenae Day, Kelly Bjork and Brenda Brown!

Kelly Bjork, Megan Harmon and myself collaborated on an installation we referred to as Listening Booths (or as we 3 affectionately called them "Pods"). Each booth dealt with recorded dialog and audio. Kelly used the box I built for the last show as a cozy listening space. With a chair, small table and lamp she invited people to individually experience audio of someone who she interviewed. This person calls themselves a prophet and the hour long interview takes you on a wild ride of conspiracy theory, theology, history, science...you name it.

Megan's was a very claustrophobic box covered in screen-printed text all stolen from real conversations. You entered this box through a small gap in the plastic walls and enter into an echoy chamber of voices and conversations she recorded in preparation for the show.

My Listening Booth was a hanging box of a crushed red velvet, a less private and more exposed feeling than Kelly and Megan's pieces. You would enter by parting the curtain and be face to face with an old tape player and headphones. On the walls I installed small pockets, each holding one audio cassette tape. The tapes were labeled with the event or environment that was recorded on that specific cassette. Such as "sailing" or "party". People could sample these and therefore control what they listened to. I had people coming up to me remarking on how funny the tape "Badminton" was.

I do not have all the pictures from the show up yet so this is just the beginning!  There is talk of a website specifically focusing on documentation of STANDING. Video, pictures and so much more!
