Books (Untitled)
2008
Each book 6.75" x 4.25" x 0.6"
Four Books
A companion piece, this edition is comprised of a set of the four J.D. Salinger mass-market paperbacks on which the Untitled (Stories) prints are based. These paperback books are as they would be found in any bookstore, save that the cover, spine and back cover of the book have had all the text sanded off. No longer are there titles, bar codes, publishers’ monographs or Salinger’s name. Books (Untitled), acts as both an index and a sketch for the Untitled (Stories) series.

A book generated by processing the Audiobook version of Don Quixote through speech recognition software. After training the speech recognition software to recognize the voice of George Guidall – the narrator of the audiobook, the recording was played to the computer. The resultant text was reformatted to once again be a book.

"Gareth Long's Work in Progress (2010) was made as part of a suite of works foregrounding the mechanisms of artistic production. A looped depiction of the cartoon character Daffy Duck, seemingly locked in the throes of 'writer's block', it points with humour to the sincerity and anguish of the creative process."
